What does Medicare Part A cover?

Medicare Part A - Medicare Part A provides hospital coverage while receiving inpatient care in an acute care or mental health hospital setting.  Part A benefits also cover costs associated with rehabilitation services, skilled nursing facilities, home health care and hospice services.

How much does Part A cost?

Part A Premium - For most people, there is no premium for Medicare Part A because they or a spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters (ten years).  For those who worked and paid Medicare taxes between 30-39 quarters, the cost to buy Medicare Part A is $471 per month and for those who worked less than 30 quarters, the monthly cost to purchase Medicare Part A is $259 per month in 2021.

Part A Deductibles and Co-Insurance - There are deductibles and co-insurance costs associated with Part A benefits.  These costs included the following:

  • Hospital Inpatient

    • $1,632 deductible for each benefit period​

    • Days 1-60:  $0 for each benefit period

    • Days 61-90:  $408 per day of each benefit period

    • Days 91 and beyond:  $816/day (lifetime reserve days, up to 60 days over lifetime)

    • Beyond lifetime reserve days:  All costs

  • Mental Health Inpatient

    • $1,632 deductible for each benefit period​

    • Days 1-60:  $0 for each benefit period

    • Days 61-90:  $408 per day of each benefit period

    • Days 91 and beyond:  $816/day (lifetime reserve days, up to 60 days over lifetime)

    • Beyond lifetime reserve days:  All costs

    • 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for mental health services provided by doctors during inpatient stay

  • Skilled Nursing Facility​

    • Days 1-20:  $0/day​

    • Days 21-100:  $204/day

    • Beyond Day 101:  All costs​

  • Home Health Care

    • $0 for Medicare-approved home health services​

    • 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for Durable Medical Equipment (DME)

  • Hospice Care

    • $0 for hospice care​

    • You may need to pay a copayment of no more than $5 for each prescription drug or product for pain relief.  You may need to pay 5% of the Medicare-approved amount for inpatient respite care.  Medicare does not cover room and board costs while receiving hospice care services.​​
